Free trials during plan change/upgrade
complete

1) The problem → I have a paid membership with a free trial. However, all of my members first start out with a free membership. When they go to "upgrade" to the paid membership they don't get the free trial! The only way to get the free trial is to sign up (for the very first time) for that membership.
2) Why is this important → My members are expecting a free trial (it's in the name of the membership), but they are getting charged immediately.
3) What's your plan B → Remove my free membership (I don't want to do this) or remove the free trial.
4) Possible solutions we could build for you → Let me decide if/when the free trial gets applied or ignored.

Capture Account Credentials w/o Immediate Trials/Coupons/Payments
Matthew Palmer
1) The problem → I want users to register an account for free, and then have the option to start their free trial.
2) Why is this important → We want to capture user email before a trial or paying money is involved. Quite a number of users wouldn't even give their contact information if they have to pay right away.
3) What's your plan B → Free trials, but this defeats the use case as I want a user to sign up and then choose a free trial.
4) Possible solutions we could build for you → Integrating a free account that doesn't require a free trial, coupon, or any general payment right from the beginning.

Could this be solved with a free membership that doesn't require payments? Members can then upgrade to a paid offering with a free trial if interested.
I'll close this for now. Happy to re-open and dig in if I misunderstood the feedback. 🙌

Naitik Mehta:
Hi,
This doesn't resolve it. There is no way to go from a free membership -> paid membership with a trial right now.
The goal would be to have user enter card details and then only charged at the end of the trial.
Thanks
Naitik Mehta
Benoit Travers: Gotcha! Enabling trials while changing from free to paid memberships is higher on our priority list, so I could merge this post with that one as this would be solved as soon as we ship a solution for that.
Does that make sense? Let me know if there are other possible solutions that you have in mind 🙌

Naitik Mehta: So would this use-case apply and work with your approach?
- Registers as free
- Signs up for trial with credit card
- Gets charged on credit card if trial completes and user doesn't cancel
Naitik Mehta
Benoit Travers: Yep, exactly! I'll go ahead and merge this post with that feature request. 💯

Ryan Hartigan Does this wishlist post describe your situation?
If so, can you explain why going from a free membership to a paid membership with a free trial is important in you situation?
I'll see if we can whip up a workaround while this is pending.
Thanks,
Duncan

Duncan Hamra: we need the free membership because we want to give people the ability to sign up initially, to capture their email, and have them in the system. We want the free trial because the system is only useful after minimum 14 days of collecting data for them
Ryan Hartigan
Duncan Hamra: it’s actually very problematic right now because it says they get a trial and they get billed anyway, and that looks very very bad on our side that we immediately bill them when the checkout says they are getting 14 days to trial

Duncan Hamra: Yes, Ryan is describing the problem perfectly. In our case, we will always offer the free membership to whomever wants it. We don’t need two weeks to collect customer data, but we want to make it possible for those who may be cost-conscious to upgrade to the paid membership in order to view the available materials for a couple of weeks for free. It is important that our customers not feel tricked into paying. They need to be included in the same opportunity a new customer would have.
Ryan Hartigan
Duncan Hamra: this is extremely important that you guys fix. Right now it could be considered false or misleading representation and deceptive marketing practice, and could open either party up for lawsuit.

Ryan Hartigan & Serena Rockey: Thanks so much for the input! Makes a lot of sense. I've just flagged this to our technical team and will get you a response here as we consider this along with other technical priorities. 🙏

Upgrade with free trial
S
Serena Rockey
My current free membership subscribers want to upgrade. Brand new subscribers get two free weeks without requiring a credit card to try. This same offer should be available to existing free subscribers, but it isn't. I can offer them a free two week coupon, but this makes us look unprofessional and like we are offering a "work-around," which we are. Please make the free trial w/o credit card available to existing members and new members alike.
